How Detection Training

Works

1.

Introducing a Target Scent

Using the Target Scent, dogs are taught to recognise this odour and signal (typically by sitting, pawing, or staring) when they find it.

2.

Building a Search Pattern

Once they understand the scent, we expand to more challenging environments – first around the house, then the yard, and eventually outdoor and public spaces. We gradually increase distractions to keep your dog sharp and focused.

3.

Reward, Reward, Reward

Positive reinforcement is the key to detection work. Whether it’s tasty treats, a favourite toy, or lots of enthusiastic praise, rewarding your dog’s correct finds cements the behaviour, making them excited to work and learn.

4.

Training Progression

As your dog advances, you can introduce multiple scents, trickier hiding spots, and more complex challenges. This progression keeps the training fun and encourages continuous learning for both of you. We offer further training for those wanting more (believe me, you’ll want more!!) and different levels of competition so no one has to miss out.
